People who argue that “love/romance isn’t the most important aspect of children’s stories” or that “gender doesn’t matter” as a means of delegitimizing queer people’s need for representation ARE NOT LISTENING TO THE WORDS COMING OUT OF THEIR MOUTHS. If you honestly believe that then it shouldn’t matter if the characters are queer because— like you said— it’s the plot and good storytelling that matters.
But. Oh. Wait. You didn’t mean that. What you meant is that you see queerness as something that is always a political choice and never as a naturalized state of being. What you meant was “I never think about queer people so when they appear it’s jarring to me and they distract me from the plot with all of their unnaturalness— can’t we keep the status quo that caters to me and only me forever and in all media? I can’t relate to queer people!”
You know what? Queer people have grown up only identifying with straight characters in media because there’s nothing else for them. And when queer people try queer characters they love they’re told that they are disrespecting the author’s work and intent and that they need to stop. When we say “okay… Then give us canon queer characters then too” then dipshits who use arguments like the above claim that we shouldn’t have that either… Because society should be beyond caring about only identifying with some genders and one sexuality.
So let’s recap— queer people must only consume cishet media and identify with being straight because otherwise queer people are soulless automatons that can’t see beyond gender and sexuality. What bigots! But cishet people can consume only cishet stuff and angrily protest any other representation because gender and sexuality don’t matter to them at all! They have transcended bigotry!
